Salish Kootenai College (SKC) and the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes are joining forces to offer a unique opportunity for individuals seeking a rewarding career in welding. This intensive 8-week program equips participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to become a welder, all while providing a daily stipend for full attendance.

SKC & Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes Welding Course: Learn, Earn, and Build a Future

The SKC and Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes welding course delves into the core principles and techniques of welding. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of safety protocols, proper handling of equipment, and creating a secure work environment. The curriculum also covers various welding processes, including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and equips students with the ability to join different metals effectively.

Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes practical application through hands-on learning. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will spend a significant amount of time honing their welding techniques in a supportive and collaborative environment. The course also goes a step further, preparing graduates for the job hunt by offering valuable resume writing, interview skills training, and other career development resources.

Not only will they gain valuable skills that translate directly to the workforce, but they will also receive a daily stipend of $100 for each day of full attendance (Monday through Friday 8 hours per day), including on-time arrival. The program prioritizes enrollment for members and first-generation descendants of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes, fostering inclusivity and career opportunities within the community.

How to Apply and What to Bring

Space is limited, and applications are being accepted now. Those interested must complete two applications: the standard SKC application form and a separate welding program application. For the welding program application and any additional information, please contact Juan Perez at juan_perez@skc.edu. The application deadline is July 15th, and those selected for interviews and acceptance will be notified by August 1st.

Those who participate in the program will need to come prepared with some essentials. Sturdy leather boots are crucial for protecting feet in the workshop environment, and long-sleeved, flame-resistant shirts are required for safety reasons. All personal protective equipment (PPE) and learning materials will be provided by the program.
