Honoring 1st Generation College Students
Salish Kootenai College: A Champion of First-Generation College Students
Salish Kootenai College (SKC) is committed to helping all students succeed, regardless of their background. Over 60% of SKC’s graduates are first-generation college students, meaning they are the first in their families to attend college. SKC understands that first-generation students often face unique challenges, such as adjusting to college life and juggling multiple responsibilities. That’s why SKC offers a variety of resources and support services to help first-generation students thrive.
One of the most important resources for first-generation students at SKC is the Student Support Services (SSS) program. SSS provides academic advising, career counseling, tutoring, financial literacy training, and one-on-one coaching to help students succeed in their studies and achieve their educational goals. Students who participate in SSS report feeling more connected to the college community and more confident in their ability to succeed in college.
SKC is proud of its long history of supporting first-generation college students. On First Generation College Student Day, SKC joins other colleges and universities across the country in celebrating the accomplishments of these students. First-generation students are pioneers, and they are breaking down barriers for future generations.
This year, SKC SSS will celebrate First Generation College Student Day with a Pie Social in the SKC Student Union in the RDIII building from noon to 2:00pm on November 8th. All students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend.
Here are a few ways you can show your support for first-generation college students:
- Share your own first-generation college story or the story of someone you know on social media using the hashtag #FirstGenDay.
- Encourage first-generation college students in your life to pursue their educational goals.
Together, we can make a difference in the lives of first-generation college students and help them achieve their dreams.
